With the exponential growth in the number of Koreanists and publications (as evidenced by our findings at the UCSB workshop), our community needs a central repository for information now more than ever.

The need for such a website has been discussed by the CKS for nearly five years, but we have finally organized and secured funding from the Korea Foundation to construct, launch, and maintain a website. The CKS website is designed to fill the following needs:

Advertise information regarding current grants and funding resources available for research and travel (See the report by the outgoing CKS chair (DOC)), career opportunities such as teaching positions in the U.S. and abroad, as well as graduate fellowship announcements, KF requirements, and deadlines.

Promote language training opportunities, especially for advanced graduate students who need more intensive academic reading and writing skills necessary to conduct dissertation research, education abroad opportunities, and internship information.

Centralize dissemination of information about current Korea related events such as upcoming academic conferences to attend, apply to give papers, or volunteer services.

Create a central site where Koreanists now scattered around the globe from Tashkent to New Zealand (See story in the U. Hawaii CKS Newsletter (PDF)) can get to know the members of the CKS executive committee so they can be better informed when voting in the future.

Please log on frequently and subscribe to our new RSS feed (What is RSS?) to keep abreast of our frequent updates. Current events, conferences, funding opportunities, and job information will be constantly updated. Furthermore, we are planning to add more historical insights by those intimately involved in the CKS since its inception over thirty years ago. Furthermore, we will be adding more about the history of the organization as well as current members’ information, newly elected members’ profiles, and current events to be uploaded.

One crucial mission of the CKS website is to help graduate students in Korean Studies as they advance in their careers. Graduate students need to know about funding opportunities, upcoming conferences, and job openings. While graduate students certainly hear about some of these opportunities through their departments or online mailing lists, no central site for this information has existed until now. The CKS website aims to fill this void.

The CKS website welcomes submissions in each of these areas, as well as suggestions for improving the site. (Please see our Contacts page.) The community that lives and grows around this website is the key to its success, so please contribute your announcements and suggestions.

I regret that I will not be attending the AAS this year since I am on research leave in Japan, but I hope to see everyone at the next AAS in San Francisco. In the meantime, I look forward to hearing from everyone over the net.

Sincerely yours,

Hyung Il Pai, CKS Website Supervisor
Tokyo, Japan
March 1, 2005

CKS Website is launched

After months of internal testing and research, the CKS is pleased to announce the launch of the CKS Website!
